HMD Global Says Moving Nokia Phone Data Collection to Finland for Security

HMD Global, which makes and markets Nokia-branded phones, on Tuesday announced its partnership with consultancy firm CGI and Google Cloud to move and store phone activation and performance data at the Google Cloud Region in Hamina, Finland for better protection.

The move would deliver a better customer and device experience for Nokia phone users, by improving the speed and accuracy of device enhancements delivered to Nokia phones, the company said in a statement, that added, "Nokia phones move data collection centre to Europe in a move that reinforces HMD Global's commitment to data security."

Juho Sarvikas, Chief Product Officer, HMD Global, said, "Fans world-wide value our unique product promise; that every Nokia smartphone on Android One will receive regular security updates for 3 years, alongside OS upgrades for 2 years. We want every Nokia smartphone to stay fresh for longer and to ensure everyone can enjoy the latest innovations from Google, and so we strive to bring the latest OS upgrades from Android faster than any other manufacturer. This is why consumers can rely on their Nokia smartphone, they just keep on getting better with time.”

The move coincides with the company's commitment to adhere to all applicable European security measures and legislation, including EU data privacy regulations such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

CGI has created infrastructure between the back-end data collection and smartphones with an efficiently built architecture and optimised cost structure.


"We want to remain open and transparent about how we collect and store device activation data and want to ensure people understand why and how it improves their phone experience. This change aims to further reinforce our promise to our fans for a pure, secure and up to date Android, with an emphasis on security and privacy through our data servers in Finland" Sarvikas added.

Motorola's new Moto Z4 looks to be a viable alternative to the recently released Google Pixel 3a and other reasonably priced handsets in the competitive mid-range category. Moto mod support - namely the 5G mod - will help future-proof the device a bit although by the time 5G networks are commonplace, you will have likely moved on to a newer handset.

Motorola on Thursday officially unveiled its next mid-range smartphone, the Moto Z4, just days after Amazon accidentally spilled the beans with a full-on product page (and even sold one to a customer).

The Moto Z4 packs a 6.4-inch OLED display boasting a resolution of 2,340 x 1,080 pixels (85 percent scree-to-body ratio, 19:9 aspect ratio). It’s powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 octa-core processor and Adreno 608 graphics alongside 4GB of memory and 128GB of local storage that’s expandable via microSD card slot.

You also get an in-display fingerprint sensor and face unlock technology as well as a 48-megapixel rear-facing camera with f/1.7 aperture that combines four pixels into one to output higher-quality 12-megapixel images. The selfie camera, meanwhile, is a 25-megapixel sensor with f/2.0 aperture that uses the same Quad Pixel technology to turn out 6.25-megapixel photos.

A 3.5mm headphone jack comes standard, as does Android 9 Pie, a 3600mAh non-removable battery with up to two days of battery life and Moto mod support.

The Moto Z4 will be available through Verizon starting June 13 in gray and white color schemes priced at $499.99 although for a limited time, Verizon subscribers can nab the phone for $240 ($10 per month for 24 months) with a new activation and pick up a 5G Moto mod for an additional $199.99.

AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su's Computex inaugural keynote was packed with the hardware we wanted to hear about so eagerly. 3rd-gen Ryzen desktop processors are now official, based on new Zen 2 cores, the series includes a new Ryzen 9 flagship with 12 cores and 24 threads for $499, while the mainstream king Ryzen 5 3600 is a 6 core/12 thread 65W CPU starting at $199. AMD's X570 chipset also claims a first in supporting PCIe 4.0.
AMD is claiming their new Zen 2 cores deliver 15% more IPC than previous generation chips, in addition to new features and design improvements that include larger cache sizes and a redesigned floating point engine. Shipping on July 7, the full Ryzen 3000 family of processors consist of the chips outlined on the table below.

* PCIe lanes is the sum of the CPU's 24 PCIe 4.0 lanes (16 for the GPU, 4 for storage, 4 for the chipset), plus the X570 chipset's 16 lanes.

As expected, the new lineup introduces a new Ryzen 9 desktop processor with the flagship 12 core/24 thread Ryzen 9 3900X which is selling at a premium above the rest of the pack but features more cores and cache for a price well below Threadripper's levels. AMD was also keen to share some preliminar performance benchmarks, meant to highlight how their new processors compare to current Intel competitors:

    Ryzen 7 3700X vs. i7-9700K with real-time rendering: The Ryzen 7 3700X offered 1% more single-threaded performance, and 30% more in multi-threaded tests.
    Ryzen 7 3800X vs. i9-9900K with PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds gameplay: The Ryzen 7 3800X matched the performance of the i9-9900K.
    Ryzen 9 3900X vs. i9-9920X with Blender Render: The Ryzen 9 3900X beat the Intel i9 9920X by more than 16%.

Ryzen was already superior to Intel in terms of multi-threaded performance and most of the time value. Single-threaded performance is now stronger, which was one of the areas where Intel was still holding the lead, albeit usually at a higher price.

Additionally, the new Ryzen processors are supported by AMD's X570, the world’s first PCIe 4.0 chipset. AMD says their manufacturing partners like Asrock, MSI and Gigabyte have readied over 50 new motherboard models as well as PCIe 4.0 storage solutions.

Zen 2 also comprises new EPYC CPUs aimed at the datacenter. AMD showed off a 2nd-gen EPYC server running two processors handily beating (it was twice as fast than) two Intel Xeon 8280 on the NAMD benchmark. The company was also celebrating they landed the contract to power the Frontier supercomputing system, which will be more than 5 times faster than the current world's fastest computer targeting over 1.5 exaflops of computing performance. Frontier will be built using EPYC CPUs and Radeon Instinct GPUs.

Apple is expected to launch its next generation iOS 13 this year. The next generation of iPhone OS may not support the older versions of iPhone.

iOS 13 will not support iPhone 6s and below. The company has confirmed that iOS 13 will be available only on iPhone 7 and above.

On a positive note, the company is dropping the next version iOS support on a very few iPhones and iPads this time. The users of iPhone 6S, 6S Plus for below will now be stuck with the iOS 12 version.

The iOS 13 release is expected to happen in June this year at the WWDC 2019. The public release of the OS will happen sometime in September. According to Apple, hardware incompatibility is the only reason why the older generation of iPhones will not support iOS 13.

However, Apple follows the same pattern of dropping support for the older iPhones with every new release of the iOS. The company tries to force its users to upgrade from older iPhone to newer generation handsets by adopting this method.

Those with newer iPhones will see improvements, faster performance, and compatibility with future apps and features. Apple claims that the newer apps in the iOS 13 requires hardware that is available only in the newer iPhone and iPad versions.

The move comes after the Nepal Metropolitan Crime Division filed a Public Interest Litigation with the Kathmandu District Court on Wednesday. A day later, the Nepal Telecommunication Authority has called for all ISPs and mobile service providers to block the game.
"We received a number of complaints from parents, schools and school associations regarding the effect of the game on children,” Metropolitan Crime Division chief Dhiraj Pratap Singh told the Kathmandu Post. “We also held discussions with psychiatrists before requesting the Kathmandu District Court for permission to ban the game.”

SPACE X CREW CAPSULE

SpaceX's swanky new crew capsule returned from the International Space Station to an old-fashioned splashdown in the Atlantic on Friday, successfully ending a test flight that could lead to astronaut rides later this year.

The Dragon capsule undocked from the orbiting lab early Friday. Six hours later, the capsule carrying a test dummy parachuted into the ocean, a couple hundred miles off the Florida coast.

It was the final hurdle for the six-day demo, a critical prelude to SpaceX's first flight with astronauts as early as summer. While improvements still need to be made, the company aims to fly NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley on the next test flight.

Astronauts have not launched from Florida for eight years, and NASA is eager to end the drought and reduce its costly dependence on Russia for space station trips.


SpaceX employees cheered and applauded at company headquarters near Los Angeles when the Dragon's red and white parachutes popped open. NASA televised the descent live, the dramatic views coming from a plane. The crowd went wild once the capsule splashed down and was seen floating upright.

"Just amazing. I can't believe how well the whole mission has gone" with all major milestones met, said Benji Reed, SpaceX's director of crew mission management.

It was the first time in 50 years that a capsule designed for astronauts returned from space by plopping into the Atlantic. Apollo 9 — which orbited Earth in preparation for the moon landings — splashed down near the Bahamas on March 13, 1969.

Space station astronauts have been stuck riding Russian rockets since NASA's shuttles retired in 2011. NASA is counting on SpaceX and Boeing to start launching astronauts this year. SpaceX — which has been delivering station cargo for years — is shooting for summer.

NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine was ecstatic following splashdown. All this is "leading to a day where we are launching American astronauts on American rockets from American soil," he said.

A pair of recovery ships was stationed in the Atlantic well before splashdown and quickly moved in, lifting the capsule from the water within an hour. The capsule is expected at Port Canaveral on Saturday night. Splashdown will occur much closer to shore once astronauts start flying.

Astronaut Shane Kimbrough, part of the recovery team, said it was incredible watching the splashdown up close. The capsule had brown scorch marks from top to bottom, but otherwise looked fine.

Canadian space station astronaut David Saint-Jacques was the first to enter the Dragon capsule and the last to leave this week. He found it "very slick" and called it business class.

Next up is Boeing.
Boeing plans to launch its Starliner capsule without a crew as early as next month and with astronauts possibly in August. The Starliner is designed to land on land — in the U.S. Southwest.

NASA awarded the first contracts in 2014 to SpaceX and Boeing, now totalling about $8 billion. This first SpaceX test flight opens a new era, Bridenstine said, with new technology and new business approaches.

SpaceX acknowledges some capsule systems need more work before Behnken and Hurley climb aboard for liftoff, as early as July. Vibration, acoustic and other measurements were taken throughout the recently completed flight, not only of the capsule but also the mannequin — named Ripley after the lead character in the "Alien" films — which was strapped into one of the four seats.

Hurley tweeted: "It's been a joy to watch the teams in action and I can't wait to climb on board the next one!"

A small blue and green plush toy shaped like Earth — which SpaceX chief executive Elon Musk termed a zero-gravity indicator — was left behind on the space station. Behnken and Hurley will bring it back on their flight.
